A belly cast is a fabulous way to have a physical piece of your pregnancy to always remember. It can be used as an artistic sculptural installation or even hung in the nursery for a unique wall ornamentation.
If you have ever made or seen a belly cast ~ you know that these things can be fragile. I have a belly cast for all of my pregnancies, and although each is special in its own way, my favorite is Amelia’s. Her belly cast represents her being REAL ~ the simplicity of how she altered not only my body, but my life. She both lived and died within my womb and I won’t have the future I thought that I would have with her. No photos, crayon drawings, skinned knees to kiss. No first words, cuddles, smiles, birthdays ~ no wedding, or grandchildren. So, you can imagine, anything that I have from my time with her is precious beyond measure . . . beyond words! I cannot imagine entrusting it to anyone else.
This being said, there is nothing more flattering than to be trusted with handling and painting something this precious! My friend entrusted me with her belly cast. The cast that was created from her pregnancy with a precious baby girl who died. I am so honored to have been given the chance to create this for her. Read more about why I choose this designs below.
I decided upon the midnight colors of deep purple fading into blue for the sky because my friend mentioned that the color purple and stars always made her think of her daughter. The universe with millions of stars leapt into my head. And the shooting star represents her life ~ shines so brightly, but briefly. I saw a shooting star years ago during a very special evening in my life ~ and that image never left me. . .so I recreated it on the cast. The hand and foot prints are the real prints of my friend’s daughter and their position within the cast is how she laid within her mama’s womb.
